We are actually spiritual entities that are trapped within the physical vessel of a body. There is a mental component of our existence that enables us to decide things and to facilitate action. That action is carried out by our bodies. But what human beings actually are, are spirits within a physical form.

Due to the aforementioned facts, people are not bodies plus minds/souls. I have outlined what human beings are in the preceding paragraph. The soul is that part of the typical triad of expressions of human existence (the other two are the body and the mind) that is most closely akin to the spirit. Spirits exist both within and outside of human beings. Spirits can be found in other sentient beings, and near inanimate objects. The soul is eternal, and can widely be considered a synonym for the term spirit. There is a slight distinction which does not truly matter in the context...

The spirit animates the human body. The spirit controls and governs both the mind and the body. The mind and the body are subservient to the spirit. Therefore, there is a hierarchical difference between the mind and the soul, and they are quite distinct from one another and should not be confused as synonyms in any way.

Although I am a dualist, I would never attempt to convince a physicalist of the validity of the fact that there is a spirit that is distinct from the body.
